Project overview

This project covered a single opening in a Boca Raton condo: the sliding glass door in the bedroom. One motorized roller shade was measured, made and installed for that door.

In a condo bedroom the slider is usually both the main light source and a doorway, so the treatment has to control daylight without becoming something you walk around every time you use the door.

The challenge at this property

A sliding glass door is a full-height opening in daily use. Anything that hangs into the walkway or has to be pushed aside gets in the way, which ruled out treatments that stack in front of the glass.

Why roller shades for this installation

A roller shade keeps everything at the head of the opening: one fabric panel on a tube, no stack in the walkway and no side hardware next to the door track.

Roller shades use one flat panel of fabric on a tube, so the stack at the top stays compact and nothing projects into the walkway when the shade is raised. That clean profile is why they suit sliding glass doors and other openings people walk through every day.

Fabric opacity does the work: solar fabrics cut glare while keeping some view out, light-filtering fabrics diffuse daylight, and blackout fabrics block it. Operation is simple in either a manual or a motorized configuration.

Motorization and control

The shade is motorized and operated by remote, so the door itself never has to be worked around to reach a chain, and the shade can be set from anywhere in the bedroom.

A motorized shade is raised and lowered by a tubular motor inside the roller tube instead of a chain or cord. Because there is nothing to reach for, motorization is the practical answer on openings that sit above head height or behind furniture.

Fabric, colour and finish

The fabric is white, finished with a matching bottom bar so the closed shade reads as a continuation of the wall rather than a separate panel over the glass. The photographs show the shade both fully closed and partially raised over the door.
