Motorized Blinds and Shades

A motorized shade is an ordinary shade with a motor in the tube or headrail. What changes is not the fabric but the access: high windows, wide sliders and shades behind furniture become things you actually use rather than things you leave down.

How motorized shades work

The motor sits inside the roller tube or the headrail and drives the shade to preset upper and lower limits. Those limits are programmed during installation, which is why a professionally set shade always stops in exactly the same place.

Power comes from a rechargeable lithium battery, a solar charging panel on sun-facing glass, or a hardwired supply where a renovation or new build allows it. Rechargeable motors need no electrician and are what most retrofits use.

Ways to control them

We confirm which of these apply to the specific motor system selected for your project. We do not promise compatibility with a platform we have not verified for that hardware.

  • Handheld remote — the simplest option, with channels for individual shades and groups
  • Wall switch or keypad — for a fixed, obvious control at the room entrance
  • Phone app, where the motor system supports it — control from anywhere in the house
  • Voice control through a compatible hub — we set this up and test it during installation
  • Schedules, where supported — shades close before the afternoon sun loads the glass and open at sunrise

"Smart blinds" and motorized blinds are the same thing

In everyday use, "smart blinds" simply means motorized blinds connected to a hub or an app. There is no separate product. If you are shopping for smart blinds or smart shades in South Florida, the commercial pages you want are our motorized blinds and motorized shades pages — the same hardware under the name people search for.

Where motorization earns its place

  • Two-storey and stairwell windows that cannot be reached safely
  • Wide slider walls where three or four panels should move together
  • Shades behind fixed furniture, kitchen counters or bathtubs
  • Bedrooms where a schedule handles sunrise and sunset without anyone getting up
  • Homes where a whole facade should respond to the afternoon sun at once

Professional setup

Setting up motorized shades is more than hanging them. Limits are programmed per shade so the bottom rails align across a wall, shades are assigned to channels and groups, rooms and scenes are named sensibly, and every control path is tested before we leave.

We also show you how to recharge or maintain the motors and what to do if a shade loses a limit, so the system stays usable long after installation day.

Discuss motorization for your windows

DIY measurements are useful for planning and preliminary estimates. Final measurements for custom-made window treatments should be verified professionally before production. Our in-home measure is free across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties — up to 100 miles around Miami.

Frequently asked questions

Do motorized shades need wiring?

Usually not. Rechargeable lithium motors run for months per charge and need no electrician. Solar charging is an option on sun-facing glass, and hardwiring makes sense during a renovation or new build.

Are smart blinds different from motorized blinds?

No — they are the same product. "Smart" refers to connecting the motor to a hub, an app or a voice assistant.

Can several shades move together?

Yes. Shades are grouped onto channels during setup, so a wall, a room or the whole house can be operated with one command.
